Brother Benno’s - Oceanside, CA

Brother Benno’s was the first shelter we visited on this trip. Started by Harold and Kay Kutler as a soup kitchen, this ministry was named after Brother Benno Garrity, a Benedictine monk known for his tireless service to the poor in Oceanside, CA. The first meal was served October of 1983, Brother Benno made a cauldron of soup at his abbey and brought it to the little house that bore his name.

This ministry started out serving mostly street people but now are serving the working poor, disabled, and low income seniors as well, who are all struggling to survive in this economy.

Brother Benno’s is committed to operating with a minimal paid staff and relies on over 200 individuals each month to accomplish their mission. The intention is to never have to rely on government funding but on generous supporters, donations and grants.

Over 200 guests are offered a hot breakfast each morning and a sack lunch as well.

There are many available services such as:

  • showers 4 days a week in the mobile shower unit

  • clothing closet

  • food boxes

  • emergency rent/utility help

  • help with ID replacement

  • mail service

  • laundry

  • scholarships to the local community college

  • 6 month recovery program

  • transportation for medical needs

You can read the story “Soup, Soap, Hugs, Hope” that details Brother Benno’s Life Changing Soup Kitchen. Just ask for a copy.

The volunteers we met here were so kind and obviously love what they do. This place has been helping so many for so long. Come by and see what they are doing and how you can get involved!
